6 Essential Oils and Their Benefits


Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

This plant is loved by most people when used as a culinary herb so it will be of no surprise to learn that basil essential oil can relieve heartburn and indigestion, as well as other digestive issues.

Other uses include boosting circulation, relief from migraine and headache, relief from colds, relief from nausea.

Basil can also be used to help those suffering from stress and depression.

Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)

Clary Sage

Clary Sage is good to use as a deodorant and to ease muscle cramps and spasms.

This oil can also be used for relieving all kinds of respiratory problems.

Clary sage is wonderful as a means of easing stress and depression.

Lemon (Citrus limon)


Lemon is antiseptic and anti-bacterial, hence good to add to home-made cleaning solutions.  You can make a good general purpose cleaner with 8 drops of lemon essential oil in 1 cup of water.  Put in a spray bottle and shake before each use.

Use lemon essential oil to give a boost to your circulation and to relieve the pain caused by arthritis and rheumatism.

Other uses for lemon essential oil include: giving a boost to the immune system, relief from insect bites and can ease high blood pressure.

Caution – do not sit in the sun after applying any citrus essential oil to your skin as it can cause irritation.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)


Rosemary is good for circulation, can ease muscle aches and pains, is good for digestion, speeds the healing of burns and other wounds, can help to relieve sciatica.

On the emotions, rosemary is uplifting, can help with exhaustion and is good to use when you are feeling stressed or depressed. 

Rosemary also helps with memory, just grow a pot of it for your home and make sure you inhale deeply every time you go past. Otherwise put a few drops of essential oil in a diffuser or on cotton wool balls on a warm radiator.


Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)


Thyme essential oil is antiseptic and strong anti-bacterial properties so is great for use in home-made cleaning solutions.

It is also a good full body tonic as it is known to benefit the circulatory system, heart, digestive system, nervous system, muscles, and skin, as well as boosting immunity.

Thyme is alsoconsidered to be emotionally uplifting.

Frankincense (Boswellia Carterii)


Frankincense has anti-inflammatory effects that may help reduce joint inflammation caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

It is good for the skin and can help with the healing of scars, dermatitis, and eczema.

Frankincense is good for respiratory problems and can help with asthma and bronchitis

It also has calming properties and helps to relieve nervous tension.

Dilution of Essential Oils

Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil. Your carrier oil can be grapeseed oil, almond oil, coconut oil or even olive oil if that is all that you have available in your home. The purpose of the carrier oil is to allow you to safely spread the highly concentrated essential oils over your skin.

9 drops of essential oil in 25ml of carrier.

The essential oils discussed here are safe to use for most people, but it is always wise to test on a small area of skin before applying all over the body if you have not used them before.
