There are some precautions you need to take even on a healthy diet. A healthy diet includes lots of fruit and fruit acid can destroy tooth enamel. Taking heed of the few tips below can make all the difference to protecting your tooth enamel.
For acidic drinks, such as your morning lemon and water use a straw. This helps to avoid getting the drink coming into contact with your teeth.
Don’t brush your teeth immediately after eating. Wait for about one hour. This allows enamel softened by fruit acid to regain its mineral content and re-harden.
Ensure that you are meticulous about using inter dental brushes and flossing as fruit fibres easily get lodged between teeth where they may not be removed by a brush.
There two foods that are considered to balance acidic food and thus minimises the effect the acid will have on teeth. These are nuts and cheese. If you have tried any of my raw desserts you will know that this is a perfect blend of dried fruit and nuts giving raw desserts yet another benefit over their cooked counterparts.
If you eat fruit during the day, carry a small pot of bicarbonate of soda with you. After eating add one teaspoon to a glass of water and use as a mouthwash to neutralise the fruit acid. Using just plain water will help, although not quite as effective. Drinking water throughout the day is also beneficial.
